Genetic engineering
Standard 3.3.2- Summarize how transgenic organisms are engineered to benefit society. In standard 3.3.2, i l.earned that genetic engineering is taking the DNA from an organism and putting into another. Examples of GMO are tomatoes and corn that are resistant to drought. An example of bacterial transformation is making human insulin by cutting the insulin gene out with restriction enzymes, and putting the gene into the bacteria plasmid. you then put the bacterial plasmid into the bacteria cell so the bacteria can make insulin. A scientist does genetic engineering to benefit society by making crops that are more resistant, and nutritious, and produce medicine. Vocabulary Recombinant DNA: DNA produced by combining DNA from different sources. Plasmid: Circular DNA molecules found in bacteria. Gene: Sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and thus determines a trait. Genetic Engineering: Process of making changes to the DNA code of living organisms Transgenic: Term used to refer to an organism that has genes from other organisms Clone, Genetically identical organisms Transformation : One stain of bacteria is changed by a gene. |
Which is a disadvantage of transgenic crop?
A. excess water requirements Whats a benefit of GMO fish? b. Grows faster. What best describes how a recombinant plasmid is in na bacteria cell? Transformation. |
